Rehmannia root originates from China, Japan, and Korea, where it is called "kidney food" and has long been a valued cultural and dietary staple. Rehmannia is prepared by boiling the root in a mixture of rice wine and black beans (!) as an infusion until the liquids have boiled away and the roots are black. The roots are then sun-dried and ground.
